Sweet Virginia

I hailed from Charlottesville in 1863

Plowed the fields and worked my Daddy’s land

Sweet Virginia lived about a mile on down the road

And in the fall she was to take my hand

Eighteen, Strong and just as proud as a man can be

When Longstreet came marching into town

Join up with the Reb’s were gonna fight the union blue

Were gonna lay them down into the ground

Chorus: Sweet Virginia she is calling my name

Wish I was back there in her arms

But my blood runs cold down in my veins

And I’m so very far away from home

Marched us through to Winchester spreading fear through the land

Old Pete and Lee were leading the way

Union army on the other side of the Blue Ridge

Looks like we will meet up in PA.

Nights were clear and cool but the air smelt just like death

The days were long and hot as hell

Marched all night to Gettysburg and never stopped to rest

For tomorrow we will give that Rebel Yell

Chorus

We tried to take Chamberlain up at Devils Den

When molten lead ripped right through my side

I have seen the glory of the coming of the Lord

But he looked like he was on the Union side

Lying on the ground my life pouring from my side

It’s getting dark way to dark to see

I can hear Virginia calling me home

Saying please oh please come on back to me.
