I Came Here to Fish

By Jeff Scheller

Dad saved up his money and locked up the house.

We headed south down the highway to visit Mickey Mouse.

Our whole family entered the park. We’d be in kid heaven soon.

But my little brother had another idea, he walked to the lagoon.

I came here to fish.  Leave me alone.

A man with a hook and some water, is feelin’ right at home.

So go on about your business.  I’ll fry you up a dish.

Give me a holler when you’re ready to go, I came here to fish.

My brother and I treated ourselves to a Caribbean cruise.

One whole week of sunshine, women and booze.

We turned the key in the cabin door, and saw a balcony.

He slid the glass, pulled out a line, and cast out to sea.

After forty-five years, he had his wedding day.

A calm and patient woman threw the bouquet.

At the outdoor reception, he walked down a hill,

dropped a worm in the water, he’s probably there still.

(optional)

After many odd years, it was time to die.

He gave his family instructions, and said his goodbye.

In a custom made casket, he floated out to sea.

A carving on his fishing rod sang his final plea.
